Although Cherokee Middle School is housed within the Cherokee High School building, it remains a separate and unique educational facility. The Middle School is accredited by the state of North Carolina and also follows the mandates of the Office of Indian Education. Cherokee Middle School is a NASA Explorer school. The Middle School is also active in sports, literary projects such as the TSA LA GI HI GO HI newsletter, the Globe project and many other activities as well. Middle School staff are very interested in the education of Cherokee students and work to promote cultural activities within the curriculum.
